External Hard Drives

External Hard Drives:

An external hard drive is a piece of equipment that can be connected to your computer to increase its storage space. Unlike the hard drive that's installed in your computer, an external hard drive is portable and can also be used to store files from multiple devices. External hard drives come in multiple sizes such as 1TB/2TB/4TB, with a minimum recommended size of  1TB.

IT Recommendations:

First, review your laptops available ports to ensure compatibility when purchasing a product. We also recommend storage sizes above the 1TB mark. With larger storage drives you are able to continue to use the same device for multiple purposes at a moderate price point.

Pros:

  • Lightweight portable data storage

  • Multiple users can access the data and information by plugging into their computer

  • Ease of use

Cons:

  • Vulnerable to being lost, stolen, or damaged

  • Individual use only

  • Security risks: lost devices put sensitive information at risk, if a device is compromised, once plugged in, malware can then infect another computer
