Mount Marty University Information Technology strictly prohibit the connection of uncertified, "unlocked," or modified Android TV boxes (including but not limited to Superboxes, jailbroken Fire Sticks, and unauthorized IPTV hardware) to the campus wired or wireless networks.
Why these devices are banned:
- Copyright and Digital Piracy: Utilizing hardware or third-party applications to stream premium cable, pay-per-view, or live sports without an authorized, paid subscription violates the Federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The university actively logs network traffic and is legally required to trace all DMCA takedown notices directly back to the student account registered to that device.
- Severe Cybersecurity Threats: Federal law enforcement alerts have confirmed that uncertified streaming boxes frequently contain pre-installed malware and hidden backdoors. When plugged into our network, these devices silently route malicious external traffic, transforming your dorm connection into a proxy server for criminal networks and exposing the entire campus infrastructure to security breaches.
- Network Degradation: Unauthorized IPTV applications consume excessive bandwidth and flood local network switches, degrading internet performance for academic spaces and neighboring students.
Consequences of Violation:
Any student found operating an unauthorized streaming device on the campus network will face an immediate suspension of all network privileges. Furthermore, violations will be referred for disciplinary action, which may include loss of university tech privileges, and fines associated with copyright infringement.
Approved Alternatives:
Students are encouraged to use standard, certified streaming devices (such as Roku, Apple TV, or unmodified Google Chromecast) to access licensed streaming platforms.
