Why does Mount Marty limit student printing?
The first reason is Mount Marty is committed to being environmentally friendly. Over the last year students have printed almost 700,000 pages. This is the equivalent for 20 trees or 6,715 kg of CO2 released into the atmosphere. As we look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce costs, managing printing seems to be one of our better opportunities.
The second is our commitment to the lowest cost of tuition possible. As a not for profit, non-taxpayer funded institution we are committed to reducing costs wherever possible. The printing budget is the second highest cost in the Information Technology budget, a close second behind the support costs for our Student Information System that runs the entire Institution. In addition to student limits we are also changing policies for the next budget year to make faculty and staff departments more accountable for printer usage.
What is the limit?
After evaluating student printing usage and policies at surrounding four-year colleges, we have implemented a limit of $15 in the PaperCut system which will be the equivalent of 300 black and white pages. You will find that while the allotment for printing is equivalent to other institutions our cost per page is much lower. Some surrounding colleges are up to 3x our cost.
How do I add credit?
Log in using your MMU username and password and click the add credit link from the left menu. You can add credit by using your PayPal account or with a Debit/Credit card in $2, $5 and $10 increments. There is no limit to the amount of times you can refill your account. The credit will be available to use immediately and will also stay with your account across semesters. The MMU provided quota will always be used first before using your personal account. All funds collected are used to offset the cost of printing.
How was the limit determined?
You may be wondering how we decided on the 300 page limit. After looking at limits at other colleges we compared that against printing usage by our students. Less than 20 of our students print over 300 pages but that 20 accounts for 95 of all pages printed. We have had some students that print as much as 5,000 pages per semester and have had instances where a single student printed over 4,000 pages in a single day. By limiting the excessive use of a few we can cut down on overall costs for everyone.
