Reporting Vehicle Accident Procedures-On Campus

After a collision on the Mount Marty Campus, please do the following:

  1. Ensure that you and your passengers are okay.
  2. DO NOT engage in abusive language or argue with the other parties involved.
  3. Contact Campus Safety at 605-661-9883
  4. If another vehicle is involved, and you are okay, check with the other driver and see if they need medical attention.  If they are injured, call 911.
  5. The video, if available, will only be provided to insurance companies, not the student.
  6. If all drivers are okay and not injured, you have two options:

Option 1

  1. Take photographs of your vehicle and the other damaged vehicle or property.
  2. Exchange insurance information with the other driver. If the damage is to campus property, report to the on-duty Campus Safety Officer.
  3. You can then report this information to your insurance company.
  4. The police DO NOT determine fault in a crash.
  5. If you collide with an unattended vehicle or property, and cause damage, and leave the scene without reporting it to the other driver or law enforcement, you could be criminally charged with Hit and Run and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.  Click Here

Option 2

  1.  If there are no injured people, you may call the routine police line at 605-668-5210.   The police will send a marked patrol unit to the location.   However, the police will not investigate “Off-street” parking lot/private property accidents.   The police will only assist in the exchange of information between the parties involved.
  2. Take photographs of the damage to your vehicle and any other property damage.   It is recommended to take multiple photographs to show close-up and then overall pictures of the scene.
  3. As a reminder, the police DO NOT determine fault in a crash.
  4. If you collide with an unattended vehicle or property, causing damage, and leave the scene without reporting it to the other driver or law enforcement, you could be criminally charged with Hit and Run and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Click Here
